Elk Grove History

In 1808, Spanish explorer Gabriel Moraga arrived in the region and named the valley "Sacramento Valley" in honor of Sacramento, the Holy Sacrament in Spanish, thereby founding the city of Sacramento. Elk Grove was formed in 1850 as a stage stop for tourists traveling from Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay Area, when James Hall constructed the Elk Grove Hotel and Stage Stop and named the town after it. The Central Pacific Railroad's Western Division passed through approximately a mile east of Elk Grove in 1868. Another hotel, the Elk Grove Hotel, was erected to serve guests at this new site.

Elk Grove remained a small rural hamlet with minimal urban expansion in the decades that followed. Elk Grove remained a small rural hamlet with minimal urban expansion in the decades that followed. Suburban development projects began to rise up around the city in the late 1980s, particularly in the north towards Sacramento. These were intended to serve the Sacramento population as well as San Francisco commuters looking for a commuting town close to the San Francisco Bay Area where they might live. Such reforms ushered in a period of explosive expansion. Elk Grove formed as a city on July 1, 2000. Elk Grove's growth peaked in 2004 and 2005, when it was named the fastest growing city in the United States.

Elk Grove Village

Elk Grove Village

Elk Grove Village is located in the Cook and DuPage counties of Illinois. The population was 32,812 people according to the 2020 census. Elk Grove Village, located 20 miles (32 kilometers) northwest of Chicago along the Golden Corridor, was formed on July 17, 1956. It is situated next to O'Hare International Airport and is economically significant to the Chicago metropolitan region due to its vast industrial park, which is located on the village's eastern boundary. Several Interstate routes, including I-90, I-290/I-355/Route 53, and IL-390, service the city. Elk Grove is also planned to be served by the I-490 Western O'Hare Bypass when it is completed.

Beginning in the early 1680s, the Miami Confederacy (which included the Illini and Kickapoo tribes) dominated the region that is now the Village of Elk Grove. In the early 1700s, the Iroquois and Fox drove the Confederacy out of the region. In the 1700s, the French-allied Potawatomi began raiding and capturing Northern Illinois. The Potawatomi pushed southward from their territory in Green Bay and westward from their holdings in Detroit in the late 1700s and early 1800s, eventually controlling an L-shaped swath of land stretching from Green Bay to the Illinois River and from the Mississippi River to the Maumee River. The Potawatomi signed the Treaty of Chicago with the United States Government in 1833. In return for a piece of territory west of the Mississippi, the Treaty handed the United States possession of all land west of Lake Michigan and east of Lake Winnebago. In this treaty, the territory that is now Elk Grove was transferred to the United States, sparking substantial white immigration to the Northern Illinois area. The property was acquired by the US government for roughly 15 cents per acre and then resold to white settlers for 1.25 dollars per acre.

The village of Elk Grove Township was initially created in 1956 as a planned suburban town. Centex Corporation built the vast bulk of the residences. The town was originally planned to include distinct residential and industrial zones (the latter of which would subsequently become the largest industrial park in the United States). It was home to numerous farmers and their families (mainly German immigrants) prior to its development as a residential town. Many of the village's principal streets are named after these farmers. Busse Farm, located between Higgins Road and Oakton Street, was the village's penultimate undeveloped agricultural land, and was once proposed as a site for a new Chicago Bears stadium to replace the outdated Soldier Field. The site was sold in 2018 to be developed into the Elk Grove Technology Park.

Elk Grove Village's initial limits were Higgins Road (Illinois Route 72) to the north, State Road (now Arlington Heights Road) to the west, Landmeier Road to the south, and Wildwood Road to the east. During the 1960s, the community quickly doubled in size. Most of the area between O'Hare Airport and I-290/IL-53 had been developed by the end of the decade. New roads, schools, and parks were built as the settlement spread to the south and west. Rupley Elementary School was the first to be built in Elk Grove Village. It was named after Ira Rupley, a Centex executive vice president who was instrumental in the village's early growth. Tonne Road and Ridge Avenue in Elk Grove Village have seen the construction of new apartment developments. These developments have now been subdivided and some have been converted into condominiums. Throughout the 1980s, the hamlet saw continuing residential, commercial, and industrial expansion. However, Lively Junior High School was no longer required and suffered rapidly dropping enrolment. The school system closed it down, leased it to the Elk Grove Park system, and refurbished it to become the Jack E. Claes Pavilion Recreation Facility. School District 59 constructed administrative offices on the property.

Elk Grove Village was briefly in the national news in 1982, when 12-year-old Mary Kellerman died after swallowing a Tylenol capsule laced with potassium cyanide, one of the first recorded deaths in the Chicago Tylenol murders case. The case resulted in more rigorous FDA restrictions regarding tamper-evident technology. In the 1990s and 2000s, the village undertook a number of beautification and reconstruction projects, including the building of a clock tower at Village Hall, brick-paved crosswalks in residential neighborhoods, new planting in boulevards and other public spaces, and retro-themed street lighting. Elk Grove Village was one of the first communities in Illinois to establish a public smoking ban in 2006, and it was also one of the first Chicago suburbs to utilize red light cameras in 2008. In June 2010, the US Green Building Council awarded the Municipal Administration and Public Safety Complex in Elk Grove Village LEED Gold certification.
