Pleasanton is a city in the Californian county of Alameda. It is a suburb in the San Francisco Bay Area's East Bay district, located in the Amador Valley. At the time of the 2020 census, the population was 79,871. The Census Bureau ranked Pleasanton the wealthiest middle-sized city in the United States in 2005 and 2007. Pleasanton is home to the headquarters of Safeway, Workday, Ellie Mae, Roche Molecular Diagnostics, Blackhawk Network Holdings, and Veeva Systems. Shootouts on Main Street were not uncommon. Banditos like Claudio Feliz and Joaquin Murrieta would assault prospectors returning from the gold rush fields and take sanctuary in Alisal. Procopio, Narciso Bojorques, and others sought safety there in the 1860s. Pleasanton is located on the Rancho Valle de San José and Rancho Santa Rita land concessions in Mexico. John W. named it after a buddy, Union army cavalry Major General Alfred Pleasonton. Kottinger, an Alameda County justice of the peace, in the 1860s. The present spelling appears to be the result of a misspelling by a recording clerk in Washington, D.C.

Pleasanton served as the setting for the 1917 film Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, starring Mary Pickford. Radum facility was a sand and gravel facility built by Henry J. Kaiser Co. in 1931 at the Radum railroad station, one mile east of Pleasanton.

Pleasanton Women's Improvement Club was established in 1908 to improve the community of Pleasanton, an agricultural town in the "Tri-Valley" region east of San Francisco.
